Trapped in innocence

Thump! The sound echoed through the room, followed by a stern voice. “Why aren’t you listening? Why aren’t you sitting the right way? You’re supposed to do this, not that!” The voice trailed off, and the scene shifted to a little girl engrossed in play. She was recreating a family scene with her teddy bear, trying her best to get every detail just right. She had heard about families from someone, somewhere, and was determined to mimic it perfectly.

The little girl’s anxiety was palpable as she fretted over every tiny aspect, fearful that one misstep would land her in trouble. Her teddy bear, her “husband” in this makeshift family, sat patiently as she orchestrated the scene. Unbeknownst to her, this teddy bear was, in reality, me – a grown man trapped treated like a toy to play.
